Island of Vis
The island of Vis is the most remote inhabited island in Central Dalmatia about 50 km away from the mainland, and its peculiarity is that it is only in the last 30 years open for tourist visits. Vis is a beautiful pearl of the Adriatic Sea that can give visitors an exceptional experience. Parts of larger and smaller islets, scattered on the beautiful sea are unique beauties.
As many as seven areas of the Vis Archipelago are protected by various categories – the Nature Protection Act: the volcanic islands of Brusnik and Jabuka, the Blue Cave, Medvidina cave, the island of Ravnik and Zelena cave, and the bay of Stiniva.
Blue Cave tour
Blue Cave, it is probably the most famous place on this tour and will surely amaze you the most! Many agree that the visit is most beautiful between 11am and 2pm on a sunny day. If you get to the cave before 10 o’clock, you will see not so intense light. Once inside the cave, you can spend 15 minutes in it, which is enough to experience the beauty of the blue rays spread by crystal clear waves. Please note that you should not swim inside, but you can do it in other caves on Biševo.
The entrance to this magical cave was expanded by blasting in 1884 by the Viennese painter Baron Eugen Ransonnet, who first wrote about it in the Viennese newspaper, after being told about it by local fishermen, and today it is about two and a half meters high. The cave is 36 meters long and 10 to 12 meters wide, up to 15 meters high and up to 16 meters deep.
There is no magical light in the entrance hall, but we see all the grandeur of the Blue Cave in the second, larger hall, which is separated from the first and submerged by a bridge-shaped rock. Through the natural opening below the sea level, sunlight penetrates to the sand and white rocks at the bottom around noon, from there it bounces and illuminates the cave with blue, and objects in the sea in silver, so if you put your hand in the sea it becomes silver in no time.
Most people visit the Blue Cave as part of an organized group, and the journey from Split to Biševo and back takes three hours by motorboat. If Split is your starting point, then definitely choose a tour that includes a multi-location tour.
